Two Types Of Docks To Consider For Your Lake Home

If you have a lakefront home, then a dock is almost a necessity. Even if you don't have a boat, a dock doubles as an outdoor deck where you can lounge in the sun, entertain, and dive into the water. There are two basic types of docks you can have installed. One is the stationary type and the other is floating. Here's a look at the two options and how to determine which one is best for you.

Floating Docks

If you want a dock on a budget, then a floating dock is the answer. These float on top of the water so there is no expense associated with driving piers into the ground. You can place a floating dock anywhere and tow it where you need to. During swimming season, you may want to tow it out into the lake as a resting and diving island. These docks are also ideal for keeping near the shore to dock small boats.

One downside to floating docks is that they may wash away during a big flood. They are also somewhat unstable, however, they always stay on the surface of the water, which is nice if the level of your lake fluctuates a lot. A floating dock can even be taken out of the water at the end of the summer season to protect it during the winter.

Stationary Docks

Stationary docks use wood pilings or pipes to hold the dock in place. Wood pilings are more common because they offer more stability in deep and fast water. The advantage to a wood piling dock is that you don't have to worry about it washing away. Plus, it is very stable, so it is the best dock for large boats. This is the kind of dock you need if you want to install a boat lift.

The nice thing about stationary docks is that you can customize them any way you want. You might want to suspend a tanning net over the side or install planters or an outdoor bar. You can even build a double-decker dock so you can lift your boat into the shade for storage. A double-decker dock is something to consider if you do a lot of outdoor entertaining on your property.

Talk to a dock contractor about your options for putting in a dock on your property. Let them know the type of boat you have if you have one and if you want a dock for entertaining or swimming. You can have the perfect dock designed and built that is the ideal complement to your home, or you can just have a budget dock put in that increases family water fun during the summer.
